Learn to Ride: MOCO's Bike Intensive Program

Five days. One-on-one coaching from pediatric physical therapists. Kids who are ready to pedal on their own, no matter how many times they've tried before.

Quick Answer

MOCO Movement Center's Bike Intensive is a five-day, one-on-one learn-to-ride program for kids led by pediatric physical therapists in Kensington, MD. The program starts with a Bike Fit at MOCO's Kensington office and progresses through balance, gliding, pedaling, and braking; the five-day intensive is $500. It's designed for kids who have struggled with other bike classes or private lessons, including kids with coordination challenges, sensory sensitivities, or anxiety around riding, as well as typically developing kids who just need focused instruction. MOCO uses an interest list rather than open registration and reaches out directly as sessions open, including a possible Fall Evening Intensive. Sessions serve families across Montgomery County, including Bethesda, Silver Spring, Rockville, Gaithersburg, and Potomac, as well as Prince George's and Howard Counties, Washington, DC, and the greater DMV. Contact MOCO at 301-770-5437 or www.mocomc.com to join the interest list.

Why Families Come to Us to Learn to Bike

If your child has tried to learn to ride before, private lessons, a class, a well-meaning relative running behind the seat, and it just hasn't clicked, you're not alone. And it's not because they're not trying hard enough.

Some kids need more than repetition. They need someone who understands why balance, motor planning, or confidence is getting in the way, and who knows how to work with that instead of around it.

That's what MOCO's Bike Intensive was built for. We've helped riders of all ages go from hesitant, frustrated, or scared to pedaling on their own, and we've done it in as little as one week.

What the Bike Intensive Is

MOCO's Bike Intensive is a five-day, one-on-one learn-to-ride program designed by a pediatric physical therapist. Every drill, every progression, and every activity is chosen because we understand how kids actually learn to balance, coordinate, and trust their own bodies.

Each child gets individualized instruction with a coach who is trained to read what's really getting in the way: balance, strength, motor planning, sensory input, or confidence, and adjust the lesson in real time. Each child is starting from a different place and our coaches are there to guide them.

A Real Example of Applied Functional Therapy

Learning to ride a bike is a perfect example of AFT in action: real movement, real motivation, and a skill that shows up in the rest of a child's life the moment they master it.

What Makes the MOCO Bike Intensive Different

Built by a pediatric PTs, not a bike shop

Every activity is designed around postural control, coordination, and the balance strategies that actually carry over to independent riding. This isn't a general sports camp with bikes; it's expertise applied to one very specific, very meaningful skill.

Individualized Attention

Your child works directly with their instructor for the full session. We keep it individualized because kids progress at different speeds.

A real skill progression, not trial and error

Gliding. Bunny hops. Pedaling. Braking. Each session builds on the last using a progression that's been refined across hundreds of riders.

Built around your child's sensory system and confidence, not a schedule

Every child's sensory system and comfort level is different. We meet kids where they are so they want to keep practicing, instead of dreading the next session.

Real, lasting results

Most riders leave the intensive week with the strength, timing, and coordination to pedal independently. For kids who need more time, we have a clear next step

How the Program Works

Bike Fit (Step 1):

Every Bike Intensive starts with a Bike Fit. Our team checks your child's bike for safety and proper fit, evaluates their current riding skills, and sends home a few simple practice activities before lessons even begin. Some families see real progress from the Bike Fit alone.

Five Individualized Lessons (Step 2):

Your child works with their instructor across five sessions, progressing from balance and gliding through pedaling and braking.

Home Practice (built in):

Kids who practice consistently between sessions, even 10 minutes a day, tend to progress the fastest. Instructors send home specific activities after every lesson.

Carry-Over Sessions, if needed (Step 3, optional):

Some kids benefit from one or two additional 45-minute sessions after an intensive week to keep building on what they've learned.

Who This Program Is For

MOCO's Bike Intensive works for a wide range of riders, ages 3 to 16, including children who:

Have tried other bike classes or private lessons without success

Have low muscle tone, coordination challenges, or motor planning difficulty

Feel anxious, hesitant, or overwhelmed on two wheels

Are sensory-sensitive and need an approach that adjusts to them

Are typically developing and just need focused, skilled instruction to get over the hump

Whatever the reason riding hasn't clicked yet, we start by understanding your child.

What Montgomery County Families Say About MOCO Bike Intensive

"We signed up for the intensive bike riding class! We had tried popular programs, such as Peddle Jumpers, with no success. We have even tried private lessons. My son was really motivated and truly wanted to learn biking. I can't think of a better program. The two teachers are so invested in your child's learning. Whatever their hiccups might be, they have tons of tricks and experience to get them going. And in just two sessions my son was riding. They are absolutely amazing. I can't say enough. Highly highly recommend and thank you for all of the work that you do for our kiddos! Your passion really shows."

"MOCO Movement's Bike Intensive class was such an amazing experience for my 2 children. I highly recommend it! The entire week was full of fun and meaningful games, one on one coaching, and positive energy. The best part was seeing the smiles on my kids' faces when they conquered riding 2 wheelers, a moment we will all never forget!"

"My son participated in the bike class. It was excellent. He loved every single day. The instructors were caring and invested. They really made an effort to keep him engaged because he was a little more advanced than I anticipated, but they brought cones and obstacles for him which I appreciated. He was excited every morning to go."

"Taught my 7 year old daughter how to ride a standard bike in a day or two, during a week-long bicycle lesson package."
