MOCO Summer Adventure

Every summer, a small group of children spends their mornings at MOCO climbing, building, laughing, and trying things they weren't sure they could do. The same Movement Aides who know them from therapy sessions and classes throughout the year lead the way. Nobody in the group is starting from scratch. Everyone already belongs here.

MOCO Summer Adventure runs from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Monday through Friday, for children approximately ages 5 to 10. We keep a 4:1 child-to-staff ratio all summer, so every child gets real guidance, not just supervision.

Quick Answer

MOCO Summer Adventure is a half-day summer program in Kensington, MD for children ages 5 to 10 who do best in a small group with extra support. It runs weekdays from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. with a 4:1 child-to-staff ratio. Summer 2026 is full; families can join the 2027 interest list on this page.

What a Morning at MOCO Actually Looks Like

No two mornings are identical, but every one is active and hands-on. Children move through obstacle courses, group games, sports-inspired challenges, fine motor projects, and imaginative play, all built around that week's theme.

It looks like summer camp. Underneath it, children are practicing balance, motor planning, following a routine, managing a transition, working with a partner, and speaking up in a group; the same skills that matter at school and on the playground. Summer Adventure is not a therapy program. But nothing here happens by accident either.

Balance, strength, and coordination

Motor planning and body awareness

Fine motor skills

Communication and turn-taking

Flexible thinking and problem-solving with peers

Confidence with routines and transitions

Independence inside a group

Play has purpose here. It should still feel like play.

This Summer's Themes

Each week centers on a theme that shapes the games, challenges, and projects children take on together.

Rule the School

A favorite for good reason. Children build the routines and confidence they'll lean on all school year: following classroom-style directions, handling transitions, organizing their own things, working on handwriting readiness, and figuring out recess.

All-Star Movement Adventure

A sports-inspired week built around throwing, catching, kicking, balance, and teamwork. No prior sports experience needed; we adjust every game so each child can jump in at their own level and actually enjoy it.

MOCO Celebration Adventure

A high-energy send-off week built from MOCO's own favorite games and traditions, with plenty of room to celebrate what each child worked hard on all summer.

Themes may shift year to year. Final weekly themes for 2027 will be shared when registration opens.

Is This the Right Fit for Your Child?

Summer Adventure works best for children who thrive with support, inside a small group, rather than needing one-on-one help all morning. This is likely a good fit if your child:

Can take part in a group with a 4:1 ratio of support

Can join activities with adult guidance and encouragement

Follows simple routines when someone helps them along

Does well with structure, predictability, and reminders

Enjoys movement and hands-on activities

Could use support with balance, coordination, fine motor skills, communication, or being part of a group

Would do well with a smaller, calmer alternative to a big camp

Nobody needs to do every activity independently. Our team is right there with reminders, demonstrations, and reasonable adjustments. What matters is that your child can participate safely and successfully with the support a 4:1 group can offer.

When Summer Adventure May Not Be Enough Support

We would rather tell you this clearly now than find out on day one. Summer Adventure likely isn't enough support if your child:

Needs one-on-one help to participate safely

Tends to leave the group and needs an adult to stay with them individually

Has significant difficulty joining group activities even with steady adult support

Becomes very distressed in group settings, even with structure in place

Needs personal care, behavioral, or medical support beyond what a 4:1 program can provide

Needs full-day care rather than a three-hour morning program

None of this is about excluding a child. It's about making sure every child who walks in the door lands in a group where they can actually succeed.

Getting to Know Your Child First

Before we finalize enrollment, we like to meet your child, if we don't know them already. That happens at a short Meet-and-Move visit before the program starts.

During that visit, our team meets your child in the MOCO space, learns what they're into and what they need, and gets a feel for how they handle simple activities and group expectations. It's not a formal evaluation. It's how we build good groups and show up ready to support each child well.

Children already receiving services at MOCO, or already well known to our team, typically don't need a separate visit.

Why Families Come Back

Children leave Summer Adventure having tried things, made friends, and felt genuinely good at something.

Families tell us the small-group setting is what makes it work when a big camp hasn't.

Some families enroll for one week; others come back for several, since the routine and familiar faces tend to make each week a little easier than the last.

A Few Things to Know

MOCO Movement Center is a nut-free facility.

Summer Adventure is a half-day enrichment program, not childcare or a therapy service.

Children need to be able to participate safely within a 4:1 group.

Health, emergency, waiver, and program forms are part of enrollment.

Share relevant medical, communication, behavioral, sensory, or safety information ahead of time so our team can prepare well.

Cancellation, refund, and missed-day policies will be shared when 2027 registration opens.
