Ready-To-Reach: CIMT/ Bimanual Therapeutic Intensive

Bimanual Skills and Constraint Induced Movement Therapy Program

The MOCO Ready-to-Reach bimanual and CIMT program is a FUN and therapeutic group program perfect for enhancing your child’s arm and hand skills.  We have created an interdisciplinary program that utilizes the concepts of constraint-induced movement therapy while addressing your child’s specific, individual needs and functional goals. Our intensive is staffed by occupational, speech, and physical therapists, as well as highly trained therapy aides who are there to give your child the 1 on 1 support they need to maximize their experience. We are able to target reaching, grasping, postural control, and balance to support better self-feeding, dressing, play, and academic/pre-academic skills. Our therapy team will supply your family with a transitional plan at the end of the program so that you and your family can use your child’s momentum from the Ready to Reach program to continue making gains at home.

When is Ready-to-Reach?

To Be Determined.

What is CIMT?

Constraint Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT) is a therapy technique that involves covering or limiting use in a child’s stronger arm in order to increase use of the weaker arm. This type of therapy allows children to quickly gain skills in reaching, grasping, and other motor coordination skills. CIMT works best when used consistently and intensively over a short period of time.

How does CIMT look at the Ready-to-Reach program?

At the Ready to Reach program, a custom removable cast will be built for your child that covers their stronger arm. They will typically wear their cast for 3 hours from 9 to 12 during the program and will be asked to wear it an additional 3 hours at home or in our supported after-care program.  Our dynamic therapists and therapy aides will provide a custom program for your child and will provide 1 on 1 support throughout the day. Your child will participate in group and individual activities. Extra modalities including elastic taping and functional electrical stimulation will be available for children as appropriate to their needs.

How will you design my child’s program?

We will first meet your child and complete a screening of their skills, as well as ask you for your personal goals for the Ready-to-Reach program. We will use the information we gather through the screening process to identify clear functional goals for the week and to identify treatment approaches that will be most useful to your child. Our therapists will assess progress toward goals each day and will update the plan throughout the week as your child makes gains.

Why should my child participate in a group for CIMT?

When your child is surrounded by other children also engaged in CIMT, the cast becomes normal and the children can focus on playing and learning together. Group activities are motivating and children are able to learn from each other as they experiment with new motor skills.

Is Ready-to-Reach right for my child?

Ready-to-Reach is appropriate for children who:

  • Have hemiplegia or other types of one-sided arm and hand weakness, or one-sided coordination challenges

  • Have some wrist and finger movement in the weaker arm

  • Have no pain with active movement of the weaker arm

  • Is turning 4 or older prior to June 2021(younger children may be accepted with approval from the therapy staff)

  • Can attend to any preferred activity for 5 minutes or more

  • Does not have a severe subluxation or dislocation of the weaker side shoulder

If you are unsure of whether your child fits the Ready-to-Reach guidelines, schedule a screening with us and we will help you decide!

This sounds great! Can my child come for more than one week?

YES! We are offering 3 consecutive weeks of Ready-to-Reach and other MOCO skills-based therapeutic programs. Your child can attend as many weeks as you would like.

How much does it cost?

How much does this program cost?

MOCO will work with your family to help you understand the cost of which you will be responsible. MOCO Movement Center will assist you with insurance pre-authorizations and claim submissions for all morning therapeutic intensive sessions. Reimbursement rates vary among insurance plans and some may not reimburse for therapeutic intensives.  Once your insurance claims have been processed, we will reconcile the amounts paid by insurance, either directly to you or to MOCO Movement Center, and determine if a refund or additional payment is required.
